There is presently 21 patients entered in the Cimzia to Treat Interstitial Cystitis Study. Patients are getting better and no one has had a problem. Cimzia is a drug that is FDA approved to treat other autoimmune diseases. There is basic scientific research that demonstrates that Cimzia should improve the symptoms of patients with Interstitial Cystitis. Females between the age of 18 and 65 who have not responded to other treatments for Interstitial Cystitis are eligible for this study. Contact IC Study at 760 743-0532.

Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Research

I have received FDA approval for all my IC studies and am presently the principal investigator in three research studies available for the treatment of interstitial cystitis. One is with Dr. Parsons from UCSD on a better bladder instillation treatment. The next is a study on the benefits of patient counseling and an FDA approved medicine that treats autoimmune diseases. This is the certolizumab pegol study and is the most promising. The last is a study with Allergan on a device (LiRis) I put in the bladder that may release a long acting numbing medicine to relieve the symptoms of IC.

The bladder instillation study is a one time 2 day study that patients have done well with.

The advantages of the certolizumab study is that the medicine could take away your symptoms of IC. There is a 66% chance you get certolizumab pegol and a 33% chance you get placebo. I have already started recruiting patients. you would need to be out to southern California for 3 days to check your lab work and receive the first injection, 2 weeks and 4 weeks later there is another injection, and a final injection 4 weeks after that.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Exciting New Research in Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial Cystitis Study LLC is involved is several research projects looking at ways to help diagnose interstitial cystitis.  Right now we diagnose patients with interstitial cystitis by just talking with the patient.  There has been no definitive test that tells us if the patient has interstitial cystitis.  Physicians and patients are uncomfortable being tentatively diagnosed with this lifelong disease.  There are presently two research projects in progress that not only will confirm the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis but give us a marker to evaluate the severity of the disease and the response to therapy.

Interstitial Cystitis Study LLC is involved is several research projects evaluating new treatments for interstitial cystitis.  There are over 180 treatment options for interstitial cystitis as none of them really work well.  How can we develop a good treatment for interstitial cystitis if we don't understand the cause of the disease or the disease process?  We have a limited basic biological understanding of interstitial cystitis.  However, the previous research, which was often done over 20 years ago, now gives us clues and insights into the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis when we integrate the information into our present day understanding of disease processes.  Interstitial Cystitis Study LLC is involved in four research projects that will evaluate new treatment options for interstitial cystitis.  These treatment options should help patients with interstitial cystitis as they have basic research results that support their efficacy.

Bringing a research project forward to actual patient testing takes time.  I have been working on these projects for over 2 years.  Pharmaceutical company and FDA approval is a slow process.  However, I keep pushing forward and it looks like several of these studies will start patient accrual in the next several months.  Please contact my office so you can be notified when a research study is available.  These are exciting times for our understanding and treatment of interstitial cystitis.
